    From fireflies to radioactive squirrels, lots of creatures glow. One such creature are bioluminescent phytoplankton, which float around in the ocean being small and stuff.These simple creatures have a defense mechanism: When they are disturbed, they give off light. Useful when a predator is poking around, not so useful when you can’t tell the difference between a predator and a crashing wave. To celebrate the beauty of bioluminescence, we found 25 photos of plankton glowing in the sea:
