The 10 Best Crossover Video Games

    January 23, 2012 at 5:44 am

No one likes just one video game franchise. That’s why every gamer gets excited when the hear the word “Mash-up”. Combining characters and gameplay from two popular franchises is a treat for everybody, whether you’re a Nintendo fan boy and or XBOX-phile. In anticipation for the release of Street Fighter x Tekken later this year, here are the Top 10 Video Game Mash-ups.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics

Ok, so these games all pretty much suck, but the idea of combining the Mario and Sonic franchises has been a gamer fantasy since 1991. It’s a shame that they can’t get a better shot at it than every two years in an arm hurting, mini-game style kiddie game. But something is better than nothing, right guys?…….guys?….

    Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

With awesome game play and great action, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom brought Wii owners a great fighting game. Fans loved their Capcom standards, plus the addition of new guys like Viewtiful Joe and Frank West from Dead Rising. Also, gamers met some Tatsunoko favorites like Joe the Condor, Doronjo and Yatterman-1… whoever they are.

    Super Puzzle Fighter

Super Puzzle Fighter combines puzzle gameplay with characters from the Street Fighter Alpha and Darkstalkers fighting game series. Just match up the colored gems and as they are eliminated, you get to see your Capcom fighters battle it out based on how the puzzle game is being played out. Plus, the characters and cute lil versions of their normal selves. Hooray!

    Double Dragon & Battletoads

This one seemed to kind of come out of nowhere but the combo was fun side scrolling, beat ’em up adventure. The brothers from Double Dragon are hip, cool, tough dudes and the Battletoads are hip, cool tough… toads. With their almost identical sensibilities and appeal to the exact same demographic it ended up being a match made in marketing heaven.

    Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

When this trailer came out, almost every gamer I knew crapped their pants. Tons of people had been waiting for a Mortal Kombat game that was good again and even more people were waiting for any kind of fighting game with DC characters. BOOM, here ya go. With match-ups like The Joker vs. Sub-Zero and Batman vs. Scorpion it was well worth the wait.

    King of Fighters

This Crossover franchises is known for its insane amount of playable characters from an insane amount of other video game franchises. Not only did the games include characters from the SNK and Neo-Geo face franchises Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting, but it also include characters from Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier. I have a lot of memories of staring at that character select screen forever, trying to figure out who to pick, if I remembered their moves or not and if they went well against my opponent.

    Kingdom Hearts

Combining Final Fantasy and Disney characters seemed like a slam dunk when I heard about it and it turns out that it was… and more. Kingdom hearts takes RPG elements and adds hack and slash gameplay to make a deep enjoyable game that is accessible and entertaining to older and younger gamers. A great storyline for the parents. Lilo and Stitch for the kiddie. Its a perfect combo.

    The Orange Box

This game is the ultimate bang for your buck. Not only does it have Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode Two, but it also cost half as much as most video games that came out around the same time. That meant that you got three different games for the cost of half of a game. Quick math: That’s 1/2 divided by (3 x 0.5), to find the median… I failed math a bunch.

    Super Smash Bros.

A fighting game with all of your favorite Nintendo characters. Yeah! Also, its actual a good game. Nice! In fact, its such a balanced and competitive fighter, that its still being used as a tournament staple in professional gaming circuits. Excellent! Kirby, Wario, Link, Fox McCloud, they’re all here and they’re ready to kick ass. Plus, it answered the age old question: What’s more powerful, Yoshi’s tongue or Kirby’s lungs?

    Marvel vs. Capcom

The Marvel vs. Capcom series has almost every Marvel character you could think of and almost every Capcom character worth paying. That’s gives you insanely fun combinations like Spiderman and Ryu, Chun-Li and Mega Man or even Wolverine and Blanka!? The teams that you can come up with in this gaming franchise is truly awesome. Colossus and Hulk, Thor and Mike Haggar, Jill Valentine and Doctor Doom… I could probably go on forever.
