Tomorrow marks the 55th anniversary of the first airborne test of a Hydrogen Bomb, the biggest baddest bomb the world has ever seen. Hydrogen bombs had been detonated before May 20, 1956, but this test was the first time a Hydrogen bomb had been packaged in a nice neat little container that could easily be dropped from a B-52 Bomber. The May 20, 1956 test in the small Pacific island of Bikini Atoll marked a turning point in the Cold War arms race. Eye witnesses reported that the 15 megaton bomb created a fireball that was 4 miles in diameter and brighter than the light from 500 suns.

    1. James says:

Do some research next time. All nuclear bombs are not hydrogen bombs. A goodly number of those pictures were from the Baker bomb at Bikini atoll in 1946. That was a fission bomb.
