There is a reason they are called fads. It’s because they disappeared just as quickly as they blew up in popularity.

    Today’s Fad: Orbitz Soft Drink

Orbitz was the product name of a non-carbonated fruit-flavored beverage, made by the company Clearly Canadian Beverage Corporation. The beverage had small edible balls floating in it. Because doesn’t that sound thirst-quenching? It was introduced around 1997 and quickly disappeared due to poor sales.

Here are some things you probably didn’t know about Orbitz:

“The drink was marketed as a ‘texturally enhanced alternative beverage'” Good Lord is that the best mid-90’s corporate jargon you’ve heard in a while or what?

“Many consumers compared it to a portable lava lamp.” Nothing more refreshing than drinking from a lava lamp.

“The small balls floated due to their nearly equal density to the surrounding liquid, and remained suspended with assistance from an ingredient known as gellan gum.” And doesn’t that sound healthy for people?

“The gellan gum provided a support matrix—something like a microscopic spider web–and had a visual clarity approaching that of water, which increased with the addition of sugar.” You lost me at Matrix. I started thinking of sad Keanu.

“The website for Orbitz existed for a while, but was taken over by the Internet travel agency of the same name.” Very random fact; the website for the movie Space Jam is still up and working though.

“Unopened bottles of the beverage have become something of a collector’s item in recent years, appearing as novelty items on online auction websites.” They probably sell better now than they did in 1997.

“The introductory flavors where Raspberry Citrus, Blueberry Melon Strawberry, Pineapple Banana Cherry Coconut and Vanilla Orange.” None sound remotely appetizing.

“Charlie Brown Chocolate flavor was added later.” Good grief.
