53 years ago today, NASA introduced the first American astronauts to the world. The year was 1959, and the U.S. was in a heated battle with the Soviet Union to claim dominance over space. The race to space was appropriately called “The Space Race”, and for the most part the Soviets were kicking our butts in 1959. NASA assembled a team of 7 astronauts to begin exploring the world outside of the world, and while the race between the U.S. and the Soviets was heated, we eventually one by landing the first man on the moon a mere 10 years later. That’s a pretty incredible timetable. Here are 25 awesome astronaut photos to commemorate the introduction of America’s first space travelers:
