On this day in 1940, four curious French teenagers chased their dog, Robot,  into a narrow cave and discovered the Lascaux Cave Paintings, a huge collection of 17,000-year old cave paintings that date back to the Paleolithic Era. The Lascaux Cave Paintings contain over 2,000 drawings depicting animals, humans, and abstract symbols, including one depiction of a guy getting killed by a bison. Lascaux was opened to tourists shortly after its discovery, but was later closed because the breathing of visitors and the lights in the cave were damaging the drawings. If you’re wondering what humans were thinking about 17,000 years ago, these photos of the Lascaux Cave Paintings should provide the answer.
