Scientists Discovered a Diamond Planet
Breaking news from deep space: scientists have discovered a planet in our own galaxy that appears to be made of diamonds. Ladies: feel free to look down disappointingly at your wedding rings now. The Diamond Planet, which orbits an extremely dense neutron star about 4,000 lightyears away from Earth, is composed mostly of carbon. Judging by the composition and density of the small planet, scientists presume that the carbon must exist in a crystalline form over a large portion of the planet, which means that it’s a planet made of diamonds. The pulsar that the planet orbits, dubbed “Pulsar J1719-1438”, is about 12.5 miles in diameter. The diamond planet is much smaller than its pulsar host, but it’s incredibly compressed, containing slightly more mass than Jupiter, but with 20 times the density (hence the formation of diamonds, which come from heavily compressed carbon).
It’s also worth mentioning that, in 2008, the British Sci-Fi television series Doctor Who featured a diamond planet (in Season 4 Episode 10, entitled “Midnight”). Scientists would not speculate on how the Diamond Planet might appear, but the creators of Doctor Who went out of their way to create an imaginative visualization of what a planet composed of diamonds might look like:
