On this date in 1927, an audience in New York saw an image of Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover in the first successful long-distance demonstration of television. Now almost 75 years later TVs are so common that the average household has about a thousand (also the number of channels to choose from) and they are even available in cars, on planes and people can watch TV on their phone. Suck it Hoover. (That’s a pun.)

No matter how great the TV gets, I’ll still remember the first set in my house. It swiveled and had a remote with four buttons. Super high tech. It looked very much like a couple of these babies.
