On August 11, 1934, the first federal prisoners were relocated to Alcatraz and the island prison was officially transformed from a military penitentiary to a federal prison. Alcatraz was considered the toughest prison in the country for 29 years, until President Kennedy closed it on March 21, 1963, exactly 49 years ago today. Although three dozen prisoners attempted to escape from Alcatraz, none have ever accomplished the daring escape. In 1964, after the prison portion of the island was closed, a group of Sioux Indians occupied the island in an attempt to claim it as their land. They did it again in 1969, but were eventually forced off of the island by federal marshals. Now the island is being run as a prison museum, hosting over a million visitors annually.
