NKOTB, Backstreet Boys To Perform On New Year’s Rocking Eve 1991

Poor Dick Clark. Think the stroke is finally getting to him. Losing his marbles. Talking about the old days and all the hot new bands like Menudo and Arrested Development (it was a band first — look it up). He is especially excited because the two hottest bands on the planet, New Kids On The Block and The Backstreet Boys are going to perform this New Years Eve. What a bunch of swell fellas.

New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys are bringing their ’90s boy-band magic to Dick Clark’s annual New Year’s Eve TV special. Producers say the two groups are mashing up to close out 2011 on the ABC special.

The two bands, who have melded their monikers to become NKOTBSB, performed together live for the first time on the Dick Clark-produced American Music Awards last month. The supergroup plans to tour North America together next summer.

NKOTBSB. I think my brain just ate itself in a self-defense move so it wouldn’t have to process how stupid of an idea all this is: from the ridiculous acronym to the fact that these man-boys are going to be dancing around to usher in a new years. It does make sense, most of them are used to performing while giant balls drop in their face. (Think about it.)

“The NKOTBSB just keeps snowballing … and nothing is as exciting as Times Square’s New Year’s countdown,” the Backstreet Boys said Thursday.

Going to leave that snowballing thing alone because I’d like to keep my job. This is what makes me the saddest of all; not the fact that these two groups are performing, but the fact that they are performing to the demographic that are sitting home watching Dick Clark’s Rocking Eve, but the fact they appeal to women and men in their early-to-mid 30’s who are home with young children. That means me. Christ, I’m getting so old.

I might make a trip to Times Square this year. See if I can get the ball to just land right on my head.
