7 Serious Actors Who Would Make Great Talk Show Hosts

    December 16, 2010 at 6:00 am

I’m not sure how many of you stay up late enough to watch any of the late shows.  I for one am a fan of Conan O’Brien and David Letterman.  I absolutely loathe Jay Leno.  All in all I’m not a huge fan of late night  TV but I definitely enjoy them once in a while.

After having watched for some years now I feel I have a sense for what constitutes a good host.  One is definitely presence.  You just have to like seeing the person.  Second is the ability to respond on the fly with something funny.  That means intelligence.  And third I would say timing.  Timing is everything in comedy.

So I decided to come up with seven known serious actors that I feel could be great late night talk show hosts.  I excluded comedians because that’s just too easy…..

    Matt Damon

Damon’s good looking enough to appear on TV everyday.   The man also happens to be extremely funny.  Did anyone catch that weird show that paid tribute to him?  When he got on stage he was absolutely hilarious.  Not to mention his responses were quick, well timed, and witty.  He’s a great actor but I think an even better interviewer and person.  The guy would do well.

    George Clooney

That George Clooney is always willing to be the butt of a joke or participate in lunacy is a great quality.  He’s very handsome.  An overall good guy and from what I can tell would play out writer’s jokes very very well.  I’m not 100% sure about his interviewing skills but I think he’d be solid.

    Kevin Spacey

Has anyone ever seen Spacey get interviewed?  The guy does incredible impressions.  He’s tall (which is rare for an actor).   The man is clearly smart and he just has that “Hollywood” way about him.  Almost like a Broadway actor.  Just a little more enthusiastic than the rest.

    Brad Pitt

Only under one condition do I think Brad Pitt would be great.  If he got a divorce.  I feel like Brad Pitt is a caged animal right now and he’s just waiting to come out.  He’ll be approaching 50 soon and I think his years as sexy actor might be numbered.  Get out there and talk Brad!

    Russell Crowe

There’s a reason I picked Crowe.  Sure he might start a fight with every single guest.  And yes, he might brag about himself a little too often.  However, did any of you see Virtuosity?  I feel like he’s got a little Sid 6.7 in his real personality which would translate greatly into late night TV.

    Keanu Reeves

I only mention him because of how damned popular he is with internet geeks.

    Antonio Banderas

Mr. Charming Latino guy?  Sure, why not?

*I would put Neil Patrick Harris in here but he’s not a serious actor.   Still though, he’d probably be my number one pick.
